Scientists document fragile land-sea ecological chain

Friday, May 18, 2012

Douglas McCauley and Paul DeSalles did not set out to discover one of the longest ecological interaction chains ever documented. But that’s exactly what they and a team of researchers ? all current or former Stanford students and faculty ? did in a new study published in Scientific Reports.

Their findings shed light on how human disturbance of the natural world may lead to widespread, yet largely invisible, disruptions of ecological interaction chains. This, in turn, highlights the need to build non-traditional alliances ? among marine biologists and foresters, for example ? to address whole ecosystems across political boundaries.

This past fall, McCauley, a graduate student, and DeSalles, an undergraduate, were in remote Palmyra Atoll in the Pacific tracking manta rays’ movements for a predator-prey interaction study. Swimming with the rays and charting their movements with acoustic tags, McCauley and DeSalles noticed the graceful creatures kept returning to certain islands’ coastlines. Meanwhile, graduate student Hillary Young was studying palm tree cultivation’s effect on native habitats nearby and wondering how the impact on bird communities would play out.

Palmyra is a unique spot on Earth where scientists can compare largely intact ecosystems within shouting distance of recently disturbed habitats. A riot of life ? huge grey reef sharks, rays, snapper and barracuda ? plies the clear waters while seabirds flock from thousands of miles away to roost in the verdant forests of this tropical idyll.

Over meals and sunset chats at the small research station, McCauley, DeSalles, Young and other scientists discussed their work and traded theories about their observations. “As the frequencies of these different conversations mixed together, the picture of what was actually happening out there took form in front of us,” McCauley said.

Through analysis of nitrogen isotopes, animal tracking and field surveys, the researchers showed that replacing native trees with non-native palms led to about five times fewer roosting seabirds (they seemed to dislike palms’ simple and easily wind-swayed canopies), which led to fewer bird droppings to fertilize the soil below, fewer nutrients washing into surrounding waters, smaller and fewer plankton in the water and fewer hungry manta rays cruising the coastline.

“This is an incredible cascade,” said researcher Rodolfo Dirzo, a senior fellow with the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. “As an ecologist, I am worried about the extinction of ecological processes.”

Equally important is what the study suggests about these cascades going largely unseen. “Such connections do not leave any trace behind,” said researcher Fiorenza Micheli, an associate professor of biology affiliated with the Stanford Woods Institute. “Their loss largely goes unnoticed, limiting our understanding of and ability to protect natural ecosystems.” McCauley put it another way: “What we are doing in some ecosystems is akin to popping the hood on a car and disconnecting a few wires and rerouting a few hoses. All the parts are still there ? the engine looks largely the same ? but it’s anyone’s guess as to how or if the car will run.”

By way of comparison, researcher Robert Dunbar, a Stanford Woods Institute senior fellow, recalled the historical chain effects of increasing demands on water from Central California’s rivers. When salmon runs in these rivers slowed from millions of fish each year to a trickle, natural and agricultural land systems lost an important source of marine-derived fertilizer. These lost subsidies from the sea are now replaced by millions of dollars’ worth of artificial fertilizer applications. “Humans can really snip one of these chains in half,” Dunbar said.

iPhone app reads the minds of cats, dogs … and stuffed unicorns

12 hrs.

Pets can be frustrating.?

Sometimes they just stare and stare?at you???as if you’re supposed to?magically know exactly what they’re thinking.

Well, an amusing (and free)?iPhone app helps defuse those awkward moments by suggesting what might be on your beloved pet’s mind.

The app’s called CrossTuner and it can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. All you have to do in order to use it is point your iPhone’s back-facing camera at the confusing creature near you, select what it is (currently the only options are dog, cat and zombie), and speak.

As soon as the app detects sound, you’ll see what it believes your pet is thinking.

Since I didn’t have a cat, dog, or zombie on hand to test this app, I borrowed my co-worker’s stuffed unicorn. CrossTuner happily revealed what the fluffy creature is thinking?? no matter what I claimed it was?? so I suppose it could work on anything or anyone, whether there’s actual brain-activity involved or not.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You’ll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts, or circling her?on?Google+.

CA woman gets life for murder of millionaire lover

(AP) ? A Southern California woman was sentenced to life in prison Friday for helping her lover, former NFL linebacker Eric Naposki, murder her live-in millionaire boyfriend for financial gain nearly two decades ago.

Nanette Ann Packard, 46, was convicted of murder earlier this year in the cold case slaying of William Francis McLaughlin, who made his fortune in medical technologies and was shot dead in his kitchen in December 1994.

Packard was living with the much older McLaughlin when he was murdered, but the divorced mother of two was also dating Naposki, a former linebacker for the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts who worked as a bouncer at a nearby nightclub.

Packard convinced Naposki to kill McLaughlin, gave him a key to the victim’s house and told him when he would be home, prosecutors said.

She stood to collect $1 million on a life insurance policy and receive $150,000 and free rent for a year at one of his homes if McLaughlin died, authorities said.

Packard ended up stealing at least $500,000 from McLaughlin’s estate both before and after his death, Matt Murphy, deputy district attorney, said during trial.

She pleaded guilty to grand theft in 1996 and was sentenced to a year in jail, but the murder case went cold.

Investigators long suspected Packard and Naposki, however, and new technology to identify the weapon along with a new witness allowed prosecutors to file murder charges in 2009, prosecutors have said.

McLaughlin’s adult daughters spoke at the sentencing hearing Friday in Orange County Superior Court.

“The fact that you, Nanette, destroyed so many lives, including my Dad’s, is vile. … You had absolutely no right to take him from us for your own selfish reasons. He was incredibly good to you for four whole years,” said daughter Kim McLaughlin Bayless.

Naposki, 45, was convicted of first-degree murder last July.

His sentencing has been postponed until Aug. 10.

Scarring A Consequence Of Acne Is Available For Acne Scar …

Teenage boys and girls are actually acne-prone. Usually it formed at the ages of 12-24 but it may happen to from ages 40-50. If acne occur in teenage life it may possibly explain that should be because of hormonal imbalances for the reason that in this particular cycle of life hormonal imbalances reaches its peak. Yet, if acne develops beyond puberty stage nobody can state the true source of it. And severe acne may give a scarring effect which also is needed for different Acne Scar Treatment.

The common difficulty why overcoming your acne scar applying Microdermabrasion as well as other top treatment doesn’t be effective can be due to some mistakes while treatment methods are on progress. Usual mistake may include impatient that tempt people to use multiple products, over applying or under using prescribed acne medication, waiting for seriousness of pimples before visiting a dermatologist, discontinue the application of prescribe medication the moment acne clears up, and worse common mistake is cracking and pricking the acne wherein scar tissue formation can be found.

Acne Scar Treatment is not simply overnight, thus, you must wait a few weeks up to 4 weeks for the results of the treatment. After that if no improvement yet, that’s the perfect chance to visit a dermatologist again for another treatment to use. And another thing to see the best result of your scar remedy would be to strictly continue with the frequency of using the medicine. Say for example, when your dermatologist suggests you to take the medicine thrice daily then don’t make it 2 times or four times daily and likewise if that prescription medication is good for one month then make sure to complete it. It sounds just like an elementary explanation however, many decide to make this typical mistake. Don’t mess with simple things, therefore the moment when acne exist go to the dermatologist to seek the ideal treatment don’t wait for scar because you may suspect you are just suffering acne however it is already a scar which might involve different treatment. Don’t wait the time that scars already exist owing to not resist popping and picking your pimples since this scar is significantly tough to cure.

Be aware that acne or acne scar are preventable, controllable, and treatable sort of skin disorder. It might simply be put into reality by committing to who you are a proper care and continuous self improvement for example to boost your diet, your way of life, and your overall wellness condition. To acquire this serious commitment means getting rid of your acne.

Elgin gas leak ‘has been stopped’

The gas leak from the Elgin platform in the North Sea has been stopped, according to oil firm Total.

The company’s platform was evacuated when the gas began leaking on Sunday 25 March.

An attempt to stop the leak by pumping heavy mud into the well got under way on Tuesday.

Total said the operation had stopped the well leak within 12 hours and described the development as a “major turning point”.

Learn lessons

Yves-Louis Darricarr?re, Total’s president of exploration and production, said: “Our absolute priority was to stop the gas leak safely and as quickly as possible.

“We shall now fully complete the ongoing task and take into account the lessons learnt from this incident.”

Scottish Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said: “This is clearly good news from Total that the initial efforts to stop the Elgin gas leak appear to have been successful.

“Further monitoring will be needed to ensure that this is a lasting solution, but this is a welcome step in the right direction.”

health & fitness: Twenty-Five Easy Steps to Optimal Health

1. Eat more fruits and vegetables. You need at least seven servings per day, and preferably nine. “Servings” are commonly half a cup in size. A big helping of green beans, broccoli, or grapes might count as two servings or more. However, don’t eat the same fruits and vegetables all the time. The best way to eat fruits and vegetables is either raw or by steaming fresh or frozen ones.

2. Quit or decrease smoking. Quitting is by far the best, but any reduction is helpful to your health. Avoid secondhand smokes as well. If you can’t stop, then please protect your family by not smoking near them.

3. Eat more whole grains. They contain fiber, minerals, and many other beneficial nutrients.

4. Get help for depression or stress. Contact a professional or your religious leader for assistance. It’s not a sign of weakness to get help-its sign of strength and hope. Generally, do your best to maintain a positive outlook on life.

5. Calculate your BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, and percent body fat. The way to reduce obesity is to reduce all your risks for chronic disease. Losing weight isn’t a strategy for attaining optimal health, it’s a result.

6. Calculate how many calories you need.

7. Learn how to estimate your calorie intake. Most people couldn’t begin to guess how many calories they take in daily. But people who are really successful at losing weight generally have a reasonably accurate notion of their caloric consumption. In fact, you can quickly and easily train yourself so that accurately estimating calories is second nature. All you need is a small kitchen scale, measuring cups, and a chart showing the calories in different foods by weight. Then spend a day by paling with your food. Do this for a day every week or two, and soon accurately estimating calories in your meals will be second nature. You don’t have to be accurate to the last calorie. Here’s an example: Half a cup of chopped raw broccoli has only twelve calories. So 300 calories worth of broccoli equals 121/2 cups. That’s about ? of a gallon. This demonstrates the power and importance of plants. They are loaded with antioxidants that help reduce the risk of chronic disease, and they contain so much fiber and total mass that you can eta to your heart’s content without taking on large amounts of calories.

8. Wear sunscreen. Preferably one rated SPF 30 or above. Also, avoid excessive exposure to the sun, and don’t even go near a tanning bed.

9. Eat carbohydrates with low glycemic index.

10.Take basic supplements.

11. Kick the fad habit. Stop obsessing about grams and ratios of fat, protein, and carbohydrates, and proteins.

12. Exercise your religious faith. Whatever you believe, believe it intensely.

13. Avoid high fructose corn syrup. This is found in many foods, especially in sweetened drinks. It is so ubiquitous, we can’t avoid it altogether, but we can cut way back. For starters, replace sweetened drinks with green tea, water, coffee, low-fat organic dairy products, and drinks artificially sweetened with Splenda.

14. Get enough rest. For most of us, that’s seven to eight hours a night.

15. Use only canola and extra-virgin olive oil. Replace all other oils, especially partially hydrogenated oils, with these two. This will reduce omega-6 and Trans fats drastically.

16. Eat organic foods as much as possible. Meats, dairy, fruits, vegetables, and grains.

17. Decrease alcohol use, preferably to zero. Its contributions to health problems are greater than any benefits. If you drink a lot of alcohol and cutting back seems unthinkable to you, then you probably really need to think about it.

18. Get more omega-3 in your diet and through supplementation.

19. Reduce exposure to contagious diseases, especially sexually transmitted diseases like venereal warts, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, et al.

20.See your doctor. You should be checked for the following at the minimum: cholesterol levels, homocysteine, blood pressure, thyroid stimulating hormone, ferritin, hs-C- reactive protein, PSA, fasting glucose, and fasting insulin.

21. Cut back on processed foods, including fast food and snacks. These are loaded with omega-6, Trans fats, chemicals, high fructose corn syrup, and other horrible stuff. You can find healthy food at some fast food restaurants, but it it’s rare. Replace bad, processed snacks with fruit, vegetables, and well-balanced food-bars.

22. Move your body more. That’s how we burn calories and build muscle. Increase the “exercise of daily living”. Get clearance from a doctor before switching from couch potato-ness to intense exercise.

23. Reduce your exposure to chemicals. Besides reducing chemical exposure via food, consider an air or water purification system.

24. Reduce consumption of dark meats, especially beef, pork, and processed meats, because of their omega-6 and chemical content. Replace with lean, skinless, organic chicken, turkey or fish. Try veggie burgers, and even try eating vegetarian a few days a week.

25.Get genetic testing. Ask your doctor about genetic tests as they become commercially available to determine your inherited risk of chronic disease.

A supernova cocoon breakthrough

ScienceDaily (May 15, 2012) ? Observations with NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory have provided the first X-ray evidence of a supernova shock wave breaking through a cocoon of gas surrounding the star that exploded. This discovery may help astronomers understand why some supernovas are much more powerful than others.

On November 3, 2010, a supernova was discovered in the galaxy UGC 5189A, located about 160 million light years away. Using data from the All Sky Automated Survey telescope in Hawaii taken earlier, astronomers determined this supernova exploded in early October 2010 (in Earth’s time-frame).

This composite image of UGC 5189A shows X-ray data from Chandra in purple and optical data from Hubble Space Telescope in red, green and blue. SN 2010jl is the very bright X-ray source near the top of the galaxy (mouse-over for a labeled version).

A team of researchers used Chandra to observe this supernova in December 2010 and again in October 2011. The supernova was one of the most luminous that has ever been detected in X-rays.

In optical light, SN 2010jl was about ten times more luminous than a typical supernova resulting from the collapse of a massive star, adding to the class of very luminous supernovas that have been discovered recently with optical surveys. Different explanations have been proposed to explain these energetic supernovas including (1) the interaction of the supernova’s blast wave with a dense shell of matter around the pre-supernova star, (2) radioactivity resulting from a pair-instability supernova (triggered by the conversion of gamma rays into particle and anti-particle pairs), and (3) emission powered by a neutron star with an unusually powerful magnetic field.

In the first Chandra observation of SN 2010jl, the X-rays from the explosion’s blast wave were strongly absorbed by a cocoon of dense gas around the supernova. This cocoon was formed by gas blown away from the massive star before it exploded.

In the second observation taken almost a year later, there is much less absorption of X-ray emission, indicating that the blast wave from the explosion has broken out of the surrounding cocoon. The Chandra data show that the gas emitting the X-rays has a very high temperature — greater than 100 million degrees Kelvin — strong evidence that it has been heated by the supernova blast wave.

The energy distribution, or spectrum, of SN 2010jl in optical light reveals features that the researchers think are explained by the following scenario: matter around the supernova has been heated and ionized (electrons stripped from atoms) by X-rays generated when the blast wave plows through this material. While this type of interaction has been proposed before, the new observations directly show, for the first time, that this is happening.

This discovery therefore supports the idea that some of the unusually luminous supernovas are caused by the blast wave from their explosion ramming into the material around it.

In a rare example of a cosmic coincidence, analysis of the X-rays from the supernova shows that there is a second unrelated source at almost the same location as the supernova. These two sources strongly overlap one another as seen on the sky. This second source is likely to be an ultraluminous X-ray source, possibly containing an unusually heavy stellar-mass black hole, or an intermediate mass black hole.

Journey to the Exoplanets (for iPad)

Exoplanets?worlds orbiting other stars?are one of the hottest topics in astronomy, as researchers close in on detecting potentially habitable Earth-like planets, ?while also finding exotic worlds such as ?Tatooine?, which orbits a double star. iPad app Journey to the Exoplanets ($9.99) is a multifaceted, immersive introduction to the subject, complete with beautiful artists? renditions of our best guess as to what some of these worlds might look like up close.

Journey to the Exoplanets, a collaboration between Scientific American and Farrar, Straus and Giroux, is classified in the iTunes App Store as a book. As an interactive, multimedia eBook, it?s highly impressive, rich in information and with beautiful supportive graphics (and in some cases, audio or video clips). It does well in covering even basic material in a lively, engaging way, and should be enjoyable to a wide-ranging audience, from young students to astronomy buffs, teachers, and scientists. It?s in easy pick as an Editors? Choice as an educational app.

Upon opening the app, the user is at the controls of a starship, with different panels or buttons to access various functions. It’s a bit hokey, perhaps, but it’s as effective an interface as any. Most of the controls are duplicated in a bar at the top of the screen that contains 10 small buttons with icons?the bar remains in place no matter what section of the app you navigate to. The buttons are labeled Mission Control (the Home button, by another name); What is a Planet?; Exoplanet Timeline; What is A Star; Radiation And Space Travel; Finding Exoplanets; Exoplanet Gallery; Planet Builder; Filtering Starlight; and Little Scientist. A larger tab to the right, Planet Picker, lets you access specific worlds (listed by name) from the Exoplanet Gallery.

Cherry-Picked Worlds

The Exoplanet Gallery is the centerpiece of this app; opening it up brings up 88 thumbnails?16 to a screen?showing beautifully illustrated artists? renditions of alien worlds. (In the cases of Fomalhaut b and Beta Pictoris b, actual images of the star systems are shown.) At the bottom of each illustration in the Exoplanet Gallery is a dial, with the choices Info, Distance, and Discovery. Discovery gives the planet?s discovery year and month, Distance gives the system?s distance in light years, and spinning the dial to Info causes a translucent block of text with a description of the planet to pop up. For many worlds, audio files (and in one case, a video) are accessible, giving additional info. The depictions of these worlds are uniformly beautiful, and at least in part speculative, as we have limited information about many of these systems. The final 5 are largely fanciful depictions of alien life in different habitats.?

Although the vast majority of the 88 graphics in the gallery were smoothly accessible through Planet Picker, maybe 3 of them?one of them being ?Upsilon Andromedae System??would not only fail to open but tapping on their names would crash the app, and I?d have to relaunch it. I had no trouble accessing the graphics in question by clicking on their thumbnails in Exoplanet Gallery.

The Lowdown on the High Up: Planets and Stars

Although some of the topics (for example, What is a Planet? and What is a Star?) may seem basic at a glance, they?re covered in some detail. It wasn?t long ago that astronomers were debating the very question of what constitutes a planet. The section on planets starts with the ?wanderers? known to the ancient Babylonians, Greeks, and Romans through the discovery of asteroids (which were counted as planets until it was clear how small and numerous they are), Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, and the eventual demotion of Pluto in 2006 along with the first formal definition of a planet, at least in our solar system. ?

The discovery of exoplanets has revealed new classes of planets; for example, Hot Jupiters (gas giant planets that orbit very close to their stars), Super-Earths (planets more massive than Earth but less so than ice giants like Uranus and Neptune), and Rogue Planets (worlds that wander the galaxy, unbound to any star). The app discusses these as well as hypothetical worlds such as Carbon Planets.?

In addition to going into similar detail about stars, What is a Star? has a subsection called 20 Stars: a 3D representation of the 20 stars nearest the Sun, showing their locations relative to the Sun, to each other, and to the galactic center.

The Exoplanet Timeline encompasses 4,000 years of planet-related discoveries, with nearly a third of the timeline citing events since the first exoplanet discovery two decades ago. The Radiation and Space Travel section describes the danger faced by astronauts from cosmic radiation?the risk greatly compounded in long voyages such as those required to reach even the nearest stars. The section depicts possible shielding methods for spaceships, and includes an audio interview with a quantum physicist, Anton Zeilinger.
